Theorem Learning Tutoring is a small Loudoun-based competition math program for grades 6–8. We believe most kids hit a wall at AMC 8 level not because the topics are too hard, but because they never built the reps. We fix that with small cohorts, problems kids enjoy, and a daily-practice habit that compounds.
I've loved math since I was a kid, and I owe a lot of that to a few great teachers. They didn't hand us worksheets and drills. They gave us puzzles and questions that made us want to find the answer ourselves. When my own kids started school, I taught them math the same way.
They fell in love with problem solving, and they went on to do well in AMC, Academies of Loudoun, and the PSAT. But my favorite part was never the scores. It was watching them hit an aha moment on a hard problem. Once a kid feels that, they want more of it.
That's what we're here to spread.
I'm a big believer in potential. You don't have to be a genius to do this, and we don't want children to memorize their way through. Our curriculum is designed to make kids think. They wrestle with a problem, try something, get it wrong, and find their way to the answer with a guide right beside them. Contests and exams are mile markers, not the destination. They do build a great foundation for kids who want to pursue STEM later, but that's a bonus, not the goal.
Our mission is to give kids the confidence to take on math challenges and to enjoy doing it.
P.S. My favorite number is 1729, the famous "taxicab number." Ask your kid to look up what makes it special. That's the kind of rabbit hole we love around here.
There is no AMC 8 secret. The kids whose scores jump didn't learn a magic technique. They built a daily habit. We design for the habit, not the hack.
Cohorts of 8 max. We notice when a student is stuck on a concept, not just when they're falling behind on points. The room moves at one pace because everyone is at one level.
Every problem is hand-crafted to spark curiosity, with a story, a twist, and an aha waiting at the end. The win isn't finishing a worksheet; it's a kid asking for one more puzzle.
Every solution explains the reasoning, not just the answer. We want students who can recognize a problem type, not students who memorized that "this kind of problem gets this kind of trick."
Loudoun has some of the most academically curious kids in the country, and a parent community that takes math seriously. Most of our families have 2–3 kids on the math track. We built Theorem Learning specifically for them.
Our first cohorts meet in person at our Loudoun classroom. Online cohorts are coming next. Once the in-person operation is humming, we'll open up Zoom-based cohorts for families across NoVa.
Twice a year we run full-length mock competitions. Any middle-school student can come, including current Theorem Learning students, kids from other programs, kids new to contest math. We grade every exam and send each family a short note about key takeaways.
It's the best way to give your kid a real timed-test experience without the stakes, and the easiest way to meet our instructors before deciding whether to enroll.
